How to Dictate Draw and Cut on Uploaded Cricut Images

I recently shared a project in our Cricut Customs Facebook group that used a pen and the drawing characteristic in Design Space to brand a project. Yous can check out the project here if you're interested! From that projection, someone simply asked u.s.a., "How do you use the cartoon characteristic?"And it got to me to thinking -- maybe not a lot of people know how to use the cartoon feature. I know when I first got started with my Cricut, information technology was something I overlooked because I was so excited to cut different materials. Now that I have been using my Cricut for a few years, I admittedly love using the drawing feature. I use information technology for cards, stickers and footling embellishments in projects. Today I'm going to walk you lot through how if you take never used information technology earlier and I'll show you a project I made with it also! Overall, I'd say it'south pretty unproblematic but at that place are a few things that are helpful to know, so let's get started.

What pens/markers can I use with my Cricut?

First things first, if you want to depict with your Cricut then you need some pens or markers to draw with. Luckily for you lot, Cricut has tons of them - of all different colors, kinds, and thicknesses. The pens are all labeled by their thickness, which is helpful to know when you lot're making a project. Sometimes yous'll want a fine tip and other times yous may want a thicker marker, it just depends on your needs. I often use 0.4 Fine Bespeak pens, which seem to be a pop one. When you lot showtime get your Cricut, there volition exist a blackness pen included and it's a 0.4 pen. I accept also used 1.0 pens, which are thicker than the 0.4 ones. Basically, the higher the number, the thicker the pen.

Another matter I dearest nearly using Cricut pens is that I know for sure they will work with my motorcar. You can experiment and try other pens/markers if you lot want but using a Cricut pen is the safer bet. At that place's cypher worse than purchasing something and so it doesn't work! I actually employ Cricut pens at work too when I am writing downwardly notes. All that to say, I'g a big fan. We sell a lot of Cricut pens and markers, yous tin check out our collection past clicking hither.

What Cricut machines have the power to describe?

The only machines that have the drawing feature are the Cricut Explore machines and the Cricut Maker. The Cricut Explore machines cover: Cricut Explore, Explore One, Cricut Explore Air, and Cricut Explore Air 2. Nevertheless, if you lot have the Cricut Explore One, you'll demand to purchase an adapter in club to draw. I'll include a photo beneath. All of the other machines have a double tool holder, which allows you to draw and cut (or cut and score) in i-step. I'll include a pic of the double tool holder below. The Explore I has a single tool holder, then it cuts and writes in two steps. Non a huge deal if you take the Explore 1, you'll simply need an adapter to draw! We don't sell it on our website, but you can buy it directly from Cricut here. Here's what information technology looks like:

How can I depict with my Cricut?

Now that you've got the basics down, I'll prove you lot how to use the drawing feature. For starters, yous can take your Cricut draw pretty much everything. In order to draw, you lot simply have to change the linetype in Pattern Space from "Cut" to "Depict". You can draw either images you found from Cricut or those you lot have uploaded yourself. Let's take a look at this Domestic dog Mama pattern - I found it in Cricut Access. When y'all insert an image or text onto the sail in Design Space, it will automatically cull to cut it. Like I mentioned above, all we have to do is modify the linetype and it will allow us to draw instead of cutting:

In the photograph below, y'all tin can see that I have clicked on the design (notice the blueish box around it) then I clicked on "Linetype". You can find that in the top left-paw corner. Currently, the linetype is set to cut. In order to draw, all we have to do is select depict. This is also where you lot would chance your linetype if you wanted to score, engrave (Maker only), deboss (Maker only) etc. Take note of how the design looks at present...notice how it's all filled in.

Now I selected "describe" from the linetype drop downwards. Every bit y'all can run across, the paradigm has changed and so that merely the outline of the pattern is nowadays. This is exactly what your Cricut will draw. Unfortunately, at this fourth dimension, your Cricut will non color in the design for y'all. It will just draw the outline and and so you'll take to manually make full it in, if that'due south the look you're going for.

This also applies to text too - it will only draw the outline. I personally don't find information technology to be a huge deal to fill the letters in myself, only I would love if Cricut would release this one day as a feature. Every bit yous can run across in the pic below, I changed the linetype over again from "cut" to "draw" and this is the outcome:

Cartoon-specific images

Cricut has specific images that they've design that were created specifically for drawing! If yous search through Cricut Access, you'll notice those at that place. I establish a cartridge total of hand drawn flowers that I beloved. And since they were designed for the cartoon characteristic, you won't need to fill up in any lines/letters! It will depict as is. Cheque out this project I made below using 1 of the flowers in the cartridge -- the ID is #M9C1867E and the cartridge is called "Fatigued Plants".

Drawing-specific fonts

In that location are also fonts from Cricut that are specific to drawing, which ways that they will drawing in one line and y'all won't have to fill them in. To find those fonts, click on "Fonts" and and so filter your search, similar below:

Here'southward an instance of what 1 of the writing fonts looks like - annotation that there are no outlines that you would need to make full in. Don't forget to still choose "Draw" for your linetype, otherwise it will cut it.

And that'due south pretty much information technology, you guys! That is the nuts of drawing with your Cricut. I'd love to hear your thoughts in the comments below or any questions you may take. Happy making!
